Board track racing was popular in the early 1900s. To say that this was a dangerous sport is an understatement. Speeds exceeded 100 mph. There were no brakes, and the riders had no protective gear save leather helmets and cardigan sweaters.

The board tracks were built specifically for motorcycle and car racing, and were often slick with oil discharges from the constant loss engines.

The combination of speed, splinters, and slick tracks provided spectacular wrecks, sometimes killing both riders and spectators. This was a time when cars of the period only went 30 mph, and highways didn't exist yet. So the speed, noise and potential for disaster created the best show of the day, and drew huge audiences. Public outcry over the carnage finally put an end to board track racing.

This is the only known film footage of this lost sport.
